ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team is set to begin its 2021 spring season Saturday, Feb. 6 on the road at Buffalo.
Head coach Mike Bates enters his 24th season at the helm of the Bonnies tennis program. Coach Bates returns six players from last year's roster and welcomes two newcomers for the 2021 campaign.
The Bonnies finished their shortened 2020 spring season with a 5-8 record with wins coming over Loyola (MD), Bucknell, Colgate, Binghamton and Slippery Rock.
This year's roster features just one senior in Buse Gunay, who is in her fourth year with the program and won 10 singles matches last season. The Bonnies also welcome back juniors Andrea Roque, Emily Stanley and Paula Velilla. Stanley led the Bonnies in singles wins last season with 14 while Roque registered seven wins and Velilla added eight doubles wins.
Also returning this season for the Brown and White are sophomores Amelia Haley and Amara Young. Haley won 11 singles matches and eight doubles matches last season, her first at the collegiate level. Young collected eight singles wins and four doubles win before an injury in the spring-opener forced her to miss the rest of her freshman season.
Bates welcomes two newcomers to the roster this season in Anastasia Gubanova and Sofia Franco. Gubanova, originally from Saint Petersburg, Russia, played high school tennis for The Harley School in Rochester, N.Y., where she was a sectional champion and finished sixth in the NYS Tournament.
Franco joined the program in the spring semester and hails from Pereira, Colombia.
This year's schedule is slated to feature a total of 11 matches, highlighted by seven matches at the St. Bonaventure Fitness Center.
