The St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team travels to the Sunshine State for the Atlantic 10 Championship, beginning April 24 with a first-round matchup against Duquesne. Play is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
The Bonnies were winners in six of their last eight matches to end the 2019 regular season. During that span, Bona won four-straight matches over Daemen, St. Francis (Pa.), Colgate and Marist. Also during that eight-match span, freshman Emily Stanley won seven out of her eight singles matches.
This year's team featured no seniors and just one junior, forcing the Bonnies to play four freshmen and one sophomore in the starting lineup alongside junior Kahlei Reisinger. Freshmen Penelope Abreu and Stanley are tied for the team lead with 13 singles wins each. In doubles action, Abreu and fellow freshman Andrea Roque lead the Bonnies with 10 wins at the No. 1 flight. Also helping pace the Bonnies is Buse Gunay with 11 wins, Paula Velilla at 10 wins and Andrea Roque with eight wins in singles action.
The Dukes enter the A-10 Championship with an overall record of 14-6 and 6-1 against conference foes. Duquesne and the Bonnies met on March 30 with the Dukes coming out on top, 6-1. Duquesne is led by its three seniors – Maddy Adams, Tyra Abdalla and Julianne Herman.
