OLEAN, N.Y. – Freshman Emily Stanley won in a three-set thriller to push the St. Bonaventure University women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) Friday afternoon at the SBU Fitness Center.
Stanley, a Victor, N.Y. native, battled back from a set down to secure the match and the team win for the Bonnies at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker to Romina Cupita, 6-7, she won the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3, to win the match and capture victory for St. Bonaventure.
Also winning in singles was Penelope Abreu. The freshman took down Laura Gutierrez in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. Paula Velilla won by default, seizing a third singles point for the Bonnies.
In doubles action, Abreu and Andrea Roque triumphed over Lucia Seigford and Raksha Bode, 7-6. Velilla and partner Buse Gunay won by default at the No. 3 double flight, bringing home the doubles point.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, March 23 at home against Colgate. That match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
