ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's swimming and diving team began its 2016-17 season as it welcomed Youngstown State to the Reilly Center pool Saturday afternoon.
YSU came out on top with a final score of 163-137, but the Bonnies earned victories in multiple events.
"It was good to see solid performances throughout the entire meet," said head coach Brian Thomas. "It was good to set a new standard for what we want to do on a race day. It is disappointing to not get a win, but we were able to compete for it all the way through."
The Bonnies got off of the right track early, capturing a win in the meet's first event. The 200-medley relay team of Devon McFadden, Maria Rocchi, Bridget Jordan and Rachel Taylor earned the victory with a time of 1:51.12.
St. Bonaventure also captured a victory in the 100-backstroke as McFadden earned a time of 59.24. Theresa Hutton was close behind in second place at 59.60.
Rocchi earned the Bonnies a victory in the 100-breastroke with a time of 1:07.40, and Alyssa Levac followed close behind at 1:07.48.
But, Rocchi's success in the breaststroke events was far from finished. In perhaps the most dominating performance of the afternoon, she earned the victory in the 200-breastroke with a time of 2:26.88. Levac followed behind once again at 2:30.18. Rocchi finished more than six seconds higher than the third-place finisher (Zsani Csado, YSU. 2:32.90).
"It was killer. Just killer," said Thomas on Rocchi's performance in the event. "What impressed me the most was her approach. As a program, we want to be aggressive with everything that we do. And she had that aggressive approach today.
