Late Offense, Walk-Off Blast Send Flyers To Doubleheader Sweep

DAYTON, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University women's softball team dropped both games of an Atlantic 10 doubleheader vs. Dayton Friday afternoon.

The Bonnies and the Flyers combined for six home runs in game one with Dayton coming out on top, 7-3.

It was a battle of pitching and defense in game two. Tied into the seventh inning, Dayton used a walk-off home run in the home half of the inning to take the nightcap, 2-1.

The Flyers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a two-out home run in the bottom of the third.

Tierney Fitzgerald cut the Bona deficit in half with her first home run of the year in the top of the fourth. Two batters later, Emily Lewandowski blasted the first round-tripper of her career to centerfield, tying the game at 2-2.

Dayton, however, used a five-run bottom of the sixth to break open a tight contest and take a commanding 7-2 lead late. The Flyers turned the tide with a grand slam followed by another solo blast to pull away from the visitors.

Haley Strang did her best to keep the Bonnies in the game, sending a ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season in the top of the seventh, but the Bonnies could pull no closer.

Ally Haskell earned the game one start, working 5.1 innings. Haskell struck out two Dayton batters. Emily Phelan worked in relief, getting the final two outs.

Megan Gist's walk-off solo home run gave the Flyers the doubleheader sweep and handed the Bonnies a heartbreaker.

The Bonnies got on the board first when Olivia Moon doubled home Strang in the top of the second, giving St. Bonaventure a 1-0 edge.

Dayton responded with an RBI double in the bottom half of the second to tie the game.

Pitching controlled game two as Phalen got the start in the circle for the Bonnies, working 6.1 innings and struck out four along the way. The freshman was outstanding, scattering nine hits but not walking a single batter.

The Bonnies and the Flyers are back at it Saturday afternoon with another doubleheader. Game one is slated for 12:00 p.m.
