Bonnies Fall to Canisius in Mid-Week Doubleheader

BUFFALO - Home runs by Abigail Stone and Kaitlin Caringi, as well as two hits from Madison Stewart, were not enough to project the St. Bonaventure University softball team past Canisius in a doubleheader Tuesday. The Bonnies fell in game one, 12-0, in five innings, and were defeated in game two, 10-5.

GAME 1 – Canisius 12, St. Bonaventure 0 (5 Innings) | Box Score

The Golden Griffins took an early lead over the Bonnies in the bottom of the second when they pushed five runs across the board.

Canisius broke the game open when an error brought Hannah Catallo-Stooks across the plate. With two outs, Morgan Altman smacked a three-run single into right field to give the Griffs a 5-0 lead.

Canisius added seven runs in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Castro hit a grand slam, which was immediately followed by a three-run homer from Catallo-Stooks.

Alexandra Piergustavo was the only Bonnie to have a hit in the first game, tallying a single and a double in the Bonnies loss.

Alexis Churchill threw five innings and allowed only two hits, while striking out six batters to earn the win.

Freshman Tierney Fitzgerald received the start for the Brown and White and struck out two batters in 3.1 innings of work, before being replaced by Alyssa Yungwirth who pitched the final 1.2 innings.

GAME 2 – Canisius 10, St. Bonaventure 5 | Box Score

Despite a strong start, the Bonnies are unable to maintain the lead in game two.

Bona started the game strong with a two-run first inning homer from Abigail Stone. The Bonnies then took a 3-0 advantage when Madison Stewart smashed a double into left with two runners on.

Canisius came back with a run on an Altman double in the first. Another run crossed the plate in the second for a 3-2, but Kaitlin Caringi helped the Bonnies take a two-run lead when she hit a solo shot into left field.

However, a four-run fourth inning by the Golden Griffins, including a second home run of the day by Catallo-Stools gave Canisius the momentum needed to sweep the Bonnies.

Rylee Hehir got the start for Bonaventure, throwing four inning and striking out six batters before Ally Haskell came in as relief. Haskell struck out two batters and allowed three hits in two innings of work.

The Bonnies will return to Joyce Field Wednesday for a single game against the University at Buffalo. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
