KINGSTON, R.I. – The St. Bonaventure softball team came one out away from an Atlantic 10 series sweep at Rhode Island, but the Rams saved the series with a walk-off home run Sunday afternoon, handing the Bonnies a 10-9 heartbreaker.
Bona took a 9-7 advantage into the last of the seventh. URI's Caileigh Holland grounded out to start off the inning, but Erika Yeager answered with a double to get into scoring position before Faith Musselwhite was walked. With two outs, Ari Castillo smashed a blast into left field to win the game for the Rams in dramatic fashion.
St. Bonaventure (7-24, 4-9 Atlantic 10) used power hitting to its advantage in the early going, building a 9-2 lead through four innings.
McKenna Holtz led off the game with a triple into right field, which was immediately converted into a run when Brooke Kane-Walker singled her in. The Bonnies surged ahead when Alexandra Piergustavo hit her second home run of the season to make the score 3-0.
The Bonnies turned the game into a slugfest when freshman Mikayla Short hit a two-run homer, which was followed by Grace Perechinsky's second home run of the weekend to give the Bonnies a 6-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the third.
Rhode Island (14-20, 3-7) began its rally with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom of the third and slowly began to chip away at the Bonnies lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Harrison blasted a grand slam brought the Rams to a 6-9 and a walk with the bases loaded to put the Rams in place for the walk off home run.
Freshman Ally Haskell received the start for the Brown and White and worked into the third (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K). Alyssa Yungwirth served as relief for the Bonnies for 1.1 innings before Rylee Hehir completed the game for the Bonnies, striking out two Ram batters.
The Bonnies will return to Joyce Field on April 19, for a three-game series against the George Washington. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. The third and final game is slated for Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
