Bonnies Drop Doubleheader to Fordham

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Fordham pitching core kept the Bonnies at bay and gave the Rams a doubleheader sweep over the St. Bonaventure softball team Wednesday afternoon at Joyce Field.

Madie Aughinbaugh and Makenzie Mcgrath combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed just nine hits on the day to power the Rams in the circle. The Bonnies fell to Fordham 11-1 in the first game, followed by a 6-3 defeat in game two.

The Rams held control over the Bonnies for most of the first game when they put three runs on the board early.

Fordham broke the game open when Molly Roark doubled up the middle to bring two Rams batters across the plate.

Alexandra Piergustavo, who went 1-for-2 on the day, added the only run for SBU when she batted in McKenna Holtz, who reached on a triple.

A home run derby by Jordan Storm, who had three on the day, brought the score up to 11-1 quickly, without giving the Bonnies a chance to do any damage at their own at bats.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week Madie Aughinbaugh threw five innings and allowed only two hits to earn the win.

Freshman Tierney Fitzgerald received the start for the Brown and White and struck out two batters in 3.1 innings of work, before being replaced by Alyssa Yungwirth who pitched the final 1.2 innings.

The Bonnies took the early lead in the bottom of the second when Mikayla Short singled up the middle with Abby Borkowski and Grace Perechinsky in scoring position. Short's hit was immediately followed by the second triple of the day from Holtz to bring in two runners and give the Bonnies an early advantage, 3-0.

However, Jordan Storm started the Rams rally when she blasted her third home run of the day.

The Rams were able to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Rachel Hubertus reached first on a fielding error, allowing Storm to score the go-ahead run.

The final dagger came in the seventh inning when Kylie Michael hit Fordham's fifth home run of the day and brought Maria Trivelpiece across the plate with her.

Junior Rylee Hehir got the nod for game two and pitched a complete game while sticking out two Fordham batters.

The Bonnies head to Rhode Island Saturday, April 13 for a three-game weekend A-10 series. Saturday's doubleheader is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. The third and final game is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
