ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Despite an early surge, led by freshman Abigail Stone's three doubles, the St. Bonaventure softball team fell, 8-6, to Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon at Joyce Field.
The Hawks scored two in the top of the third to take the lead. The go-ahead run came when Kristin Cox stole second and Amanda Kulp stole home. SJU was then able to add one more run when Kapala tripled through the right side to bring Sarah Ostaszews in.
With two out in the bottom of the third, Stone rallied the Bonnies with a two-run double to right, allowing the Bonnies to tie the game.
In the top of the fifth, the Hawks regained a 6-5 lead when Caela Abadie hit a two-out, two-run home run to center.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Bonnies were able to get into scoring position when Stone posted her second double of the day. With a runner in scoring position, Abby Borkowski singled up the middle to tie the game, 6-6.
In the top of the seventh, the Hawks took the lead and ran with it, pushing across two runs. Kulp led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second to get scoring position. Ostaszewski then tripled to bring her across the plate. Molly Kapala's RBI single brought in Ostaszewski to put the final run on the board.
St. Bonaventure will return to Joyce Field Wednesday for a mid-week conference doubleheader against Fordham. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
