Hawks Soar Past Bonnies in Saturday Doubleheader

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Strong pitching put the Hawks ahead and gave Saint Joseph's a doubleheader conference sweep over the St. Bonaventure softball team Saturday afternoon at Joyce Field.

The Bonnies fell to the Saint Joseph's strong pitching core of Ashley Ventura and Amanda Herr, who allowed a combined two runs for eight hits for the day. The Bonnies fell to SJU 13-0 in the first game, followed by an 8-2 defeat in game two.

The Hawks took control of the game in the top of the second when they put six runs on the board.

SJU broke the game open Ostaszews smashed a grand slam out past centerfield to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead in the top of the third.

Ashley Ventura held a no-hitter through four innings of play before Kaitlin Caringi came in to pinch hit for the Bonnies and singled through the left side. Immediately after, Alex Siebert singled in her first at bat of the season.

Rylee Hehir received the start for the Bonnies, before being replaced by Alyssa Yungwirth who put in 2.2 innings of work before Sam Wood pitched the final inning of play.

SJU took an early 5-0 lead into the bottom of the first against the Bonnies.

The Bonnies tried to answer in the home half of the first when Alexandra Piergustavo and Grace Perechinsky reached on a pair of runs.

The Hawks reclaimed the game with two more runs in the third and Bona never rallied against SJU starter who Amanda Herr, who tossed a complete game in the circle and gave up no earned runs and walked only two Bonnie batters.

Abigail Stone, Olivia Golay and Kaitlin Caringi all had hits for the Bonnies in game two.

Tierney Fitzgerald started in the circle for the Bonnies in game two, facing 23 batters in 3.0 innings of work before being relieved by Ally Haskell who struck out a batter in 4.0 innings played.

The Bonnies return to the field Sunday to play the final game of the three-game series against Saint Joseph's with first pitch scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
