MOREHEAD, Ky. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team ended its visit to the Blue Grass State with a 10-2 loss to Bowling Green in five innings in game one. Against Morehead State, Abigail Stone launched her firsts career home run to tie the game in the seventh, but the Eagles came out on top in eight innings, 10-7.
GAME 1 – Bowling Green 10, St. Bonaventure 2 (5 innings) – Box Score (PDF)
The Bonnies struck first in the top of the second when Samantha Moll reached on an error with the bases loaded, allowing Alexandra Piergustavo to cross home plate.
The Falcons tied it up in the bottom half of the second when Nikki Sorgi singled through the left side to brig Kathleen Shier home.
In the bottom of the fourth, Alex Sorgi tripled into left center to bring in Kali Holcomb and Nikki Sorgi, giving the Falcons control of the game. Bowling Green went on to score five more runs to end the inning before adding two more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Alyssa Yungwirth earned her first start of the season, tossing four innings.
GAME 2 - Morehead State 10, St. Bonaventure 7 (8 innings) – Box Score (PDF)
St. Bonaventure fell behind, 1-0, after the top of the first inning but regained momentum in the bottom half of the first.
Piergustavo singled into center field with the bases loaded to allow both Kane-Walker and Holtz to score. Golay followed her with a doubled to left-center and brought Grace Perechinsky across the plate to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Bonnies early on.
In the top of the fourth, Cassie Griffin had a three-run blast for the Eagles, which was followed by Alexis Strother's two-run home run put Morehead at a 6-3 advantage.
The Bonnies began their comeback effort in the bottom of the fourth when Alexandra Deal belted a double up the middle to put herself in scoring position. Borkowski then singled into center field to bring Deal across the plate, bringing the Bonnies back within two, 6-4.
In the bottom of the fifth, Stone doubled home Moll to cut the deficit to one and in her next at-bat tied the game at 6-6 with her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Morehead State went on to score four runs in the top of the eighth to take momentum and the win from the Brown and White.
Borkowski added an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth but that is all the Bonnies would be able to push across in the inning.
The freshman Borkowski was 3-for-5 on the day with two RBIs while deal added two base hits for the Bonnies.
The Bonnies return to action Saturday afternoon doubleheader with game one schedule for 12:00 p.m. against UMass in their first Atlantic 10 game of the season.
