HONOLULU – McKenna Holtz went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles, but the St. Bonaventure University softball team fell to the University of California, 8-0, in five innings in the first game of two on Wednesday.
The Bonnies had a chance to score early.
Holtz led off the game with a bunt single back to the pitcher. Senior Alexandra Deal then moved Holtz to second with a single of her own and Grace Perechinsky followed suit, loading the bases with no outs. A strikeout and a double play got Cal out of the inning unscathed.
The Golden Bears jumped to an early advantage in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. California scored three in the inning on the back of two stolen bases and a bunt single.
A solo home run in the third, a three-run fourth inning and one more insurance run in the fifth pushed the Golden Bear lead to 8-0, closing out the game.
Brooke Kane-Walker added a single in the top of the fifth inning for the Bonnies.
Ally Haskell started in the circle for Bona, striking out two over 3.1 innings of work.
Bona's second game of the evening will take place at 11:00 p.m. EST Wednesday night. Final stats and full recap will be available Thursday morning at GoBonnies.com.
