Softball Falls To Mount St. Mary's, Central Connecticut on Opening Day

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Alexandra Piergustavo blasted a home run and drove in three runs, but the St. Bonaventure University softball team (0-2) fell to Mount St. Mary's, 6-4, in the opening game of the season. In the second game of the doubleheader, Central Connecticut State defeated the Bonnies, 9-0, in five innings.

After Mount St. Mary's took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Bonnies were able to even the score in their half of the first.

McKenna Holtz had a leadoff single for Bona and moved to second on a stolen base. Holtz made it to third on an Alexandra Deal ground out before heading home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Grace Perechinksky.

The Bonnies took the lead in the bottom of the second when Piergustavo blasted the team's first home run of the season, scoring Abigail Stone in the process to make the lead 3-1. Piergustavo added a third RBI in the fourth inning when she sent a single back up the middle to score pinch runner Brittany Fair, extending the Bonnies lead to 4-1.

The Mount (3-6) came roaring back in the sixth.

First, the Mountaineers got one back when Kate Wade crossed home while Maggie Kane was caught stealing at second on a double steal attempt. Later in the inning, Mount St. Mary's retook the lead on a Mariah Godde three-run home run for a 5-4 score. The Mountaineers added an insurance run when Morgan Alisauckas singled home Kaylee Stoner, giving them a 6-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Elizabeth Enovitch added a single for the Bonnies.

Freshman Ally Haskell got the ball in the circle for her first career start, taking the loss (5.1 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 3 BB). Sam Wood entered the game in the middle of the sixth inning and went the rest of the way, retiring the final five batters in scoreless fashion (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 K).

A six-run first inning gave Central Connecticut State the early momentum and the Blue Devils did not look back.

All six runs came with two outs in the inning for CCSU, which opened its season with two wins Sunday. 

Sydney Bolan started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Ryan Eigenmann and advancing Sarah Ogilvie to third. Bolan then stole second, allowing Ogilvie to cross home, giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Kristin Ulmer reached on a fielding error that scored two more runs, extending the CCSU lead to 4-0. Back-to-back RBI singles from Eigenmann and Emily Cronin gave the Blue Devils a 6-0 advantage.

In the fourth inning Bolan hit a three-run home run, pushing the lead to nine.

Rylee Hehir started and went 3.2 innings in the circle for the Bonnies (7 H, 9 ER, 3 K, 4 BB). Abby Borkowski pitched a third of an inning, walking one. 

Deal and Piergustavo had two hits apiece and Perechinsky added a hit to lead the SBU offense.

The Bonnies return to action Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. when they square off against Hampton.
