Bonnies Late Rally Falls Short as UMass Takes Series Finale

Box Score (PDF)

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – A late push in the bottom of the seventh led by Hailey Blencowe's two-run single brought the Bonnies within three, but the St. Bonaventure University softball team dropped the series finale to UMass, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Joyce Field.

The Minutewomen took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when Riley Gregoire scored on an error and Madison Gimpl plated two with a double down the left field line.

UMass added two more insurance runs in the fifth on another Gimpl RBI double and Kaitlyn Stavinoha singled to score Gimpl.

Alexandra Piergustavo singled to start the seventh inning rally for the Bonnies with a single and freshman Jenna Richmond worked a one out walk, putting runners on first and second. With two outs Alexandra Deal joined the action, singling through the left side to load the bases. Blencowe snuck a single just fair down the left field line, scoring Piergustavo and Richmond to put the Bonnies on the board.

That would be all the Bonnies would get in the seventh as UMass closed out the game without any further damage.

Rylee Hehir started and worked 2.2 innings (3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB). Josie Borysevicz threw the final 4.1 innings for St. Bonaventure (5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K).

The Bonnies are back in action Tuesday on the road at Big Four rival Niagara for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 3:00 p.m.
