Bonnies Fall to George Washington in Atlantic 10 Doubleheader

WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington set the tone by controlling both contests Saturday afternoon as the Colonials got past the St. Bonaventure softball team in a doubleheader in the nation's capital to begin Atlantic 10 competition.

A seven-run fourth inning propelled George Washington, giving the Colonials a lead they would not relinquish in the opener.

Jenna Cone smacked a solo home run to left-center to get the inning started. Two RBI doubles from Alessandra Ponce and Priscilla Martinez made the lead 5-0. Cone and Sidney Bloomfield each added an RBI single to give the Colonials a 7-0 cushion. 

The Bonnies cut the deficit to six when Grace Perechinsky singled home Alexandra Deal in the top of the sixth.

George Washington got the run right back on a home run off the bat of Sierra Lange.

McKenna Holtz crossed home on a wild pitch in the seventh, scoring the second St. Bonaventure run.

Rylee Hehir took the loss in the circle after working 3.1 innings (6 H, 6 ER, 2 BB). Grace Van Horn entered the game in the fourth inning in relief nd finished the contest (2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB).

Perechinsky put the Bonnies on the board first in the top of the first inning with an RBI single that scored Elizabeth Enovitch, the Bonnies led 1-0.

Seven hits and seven runs gave George Washington a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the first on RBIs from Cone, Ponce and Morgan Rinehart.

Lange singled home Rinehart in the bottom of the second, giving the Colonials a 8-1 lead. A pair of RBI doubles from Martinez and Criza Bulandi pushed the George Washington lead to nine runs.

The Colonials added another run in the third on Elena Shelepak's solo home run.

The Bonnies pulled one back in the top of the fifth when Brooke Kane-Walker doubled, scoring Sydney Burk.

The Bonnies fall to 5-14 on the season and 0-2 in the Atlantic 10. George Washington improves to 22-7 and 2-0 in A-10 play.

St. Bonaventure returns to the field Sunday for the final game of the three-game set at GW. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
