ST. LOUIS, Mo. – On the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Conference softball schedule, St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis split a doubleheader at Billiken Sports Center. The Billikens took the opener 7-2 but the Bonnies came back with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Senior first baseman Katie Sinclair and pitchers Carly Bilchak and Kristen Hickling led St. Bonaventure to its victory. Sinclair had two RBIs while Bilchak and Hickling combined to hold the Billikens to their one run on seven hits. Bilchak went five innings and allowed six hits and the one run, then Hickling came on and allowed just one hit over the final two innings. Hickling worked out of a jam in the seventh when she coaxed a fly ball to end the game after Saint Louis got runners to first and third.
Senior outfielder Kelly Farrell gave the Bonnies a 1-0 lead when she led off the third inning with a home run. Later in that frame, Sinclair lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Kelly Rohan from third base to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Sinclair delivered again as her two-out single brought home Farrell. That gave Bilchak and the Bonnies some breathing room. Saint Louis scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Brianna Lore.
Sinclair finished 1-2 while Farrell was 2-2 with two runs scored.
In the opener, Saint Louis pounded out 12 hits to St. Bonaventure's four. The Billikens opened a 7-1 lead after four innings as they tagged Bona starter Josie Borsevicz for eight hits. Senior Alexis Sloat came on in relief and did not allow a run in 2-1/3 innings of work.
Rohan had two hits in the opener while Farrell and Sinclair both went 1-2.
St. Bonaventure moved to 4-14 (1-1) while Saint Louis is now 9-17 (1-1).
The Bonnies and Billikens will complete their three-game series Saturday at noon.
