ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – During a ceremony marking the start of the renovation of St. Bonaventure University's softball field, it was announced that beginning in the 2016 season, it will be called Joyce Field.
St. Bonaventure president Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., and Director of Athletics Tim Kenney revealed the new name during the Friday afternoon event, which was held at the field.
Charles Joyce of Wellsville, N.Y., and his family provided the lead gift for the project. The Joyces have been longtime benefactors of St. Bonaventure, particularl. Mr. Joyce is president and CEO of Otis Eastern Service LLC in Wellsville, which is one of the leading oil and gas pipeline construction companies in the northeast U.S.
Carney and Kenney lauded Joyce and the many other donors who made the renovation possible. More than $800,000 has been raised to date in Phase II of St. Bonaventure's Athletics Fields Project"Charlie's generosity, along with numerous others, have made this day possible," Kenney said. "Charlie saw the vision and necessity of this project from day one. He was an instrumental lead donor for Phase I of the field project and it is because of his continued generosity that we are celebrating the construction of Phase II."
The renovations, which began August26, will convert the field to A-Turf Titan, which is the same artificial turf that was installed on St. Bonaventure's multi-purpose athletics field last summer. In addition, a new scoreboard, backstop and perimeter fences will be installed. Renovations are scheduled to be completed in November.
The field will remain in its current location, just to the east of the multipurpose field on the Marra Athletics Complex.
