ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Cristina Torres netted the first goal of her career but a late rally attempt from the St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team fell short in the waning minutes against Iona, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Iona got on the board first with a strike in the 16th minute of Sunday's contest. Kiera Haggerty drove a ball into the box where Faith Preziosi was waiting and punched home the opening score. The Gaels added a second goal to the ledger in the 79th minute to extend their lead to 2-0.
In the final minutes, the Bonnies made a bid for extra time.
The Bonnies (0-1-1) were able to cut the Iona lead in half in the 88th minute as Torres found the net for the first time in Brown and White. Following a long throw in from Kacie Filian, the ball found its way to the feet of Torres who slotted home her first goal with the Bonnies in her second game with the program and St. Bonaventure's first goal of the season.
Iona (1-1), however, would run out the final minute of play to secure the victory.
Torres had a chance to level the score in the 29th minute on a breakaway, but her shot sailed right at the Iona goalkeeper who was able to make the stop.
Bonnies freshman Chiara Gottinger made four saves in net for the hosts while Torres paced the Bonaventure offense with five shots including three on goal. Clare Davis added three shots in the contests while McKenna Robinson generated a pair of shots. St. Bonaventure owned a 14-9 edge in total shots.
The Bonnies are back in action Thursday, Aug. 26 when they host Robert Morris at the Marra Athletics Complex. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
