BUFFALO – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team opened its 2021 season with a 0-0 double overtime draw on the road at Canisius Thursday.
The Bonnies looked to play spoilers for Canisius' home opener early in the first overtime period as Clare Davis had the best chance of the night in the 91st minute in front of the Canisius net, but was turned away by the Griffs goalkeeper.
Freshman goalkeeper Chiara Gottinger was able to keep the Griffs off the board in the 58th minute, diving to her right to turn away the shot.
In the final seconds of regulation, Gottinger was tested again as she tipped a Canisius shot over the bar to send the game to overtime.
Bridget Kennedy had a look at goal in the 28th minute following a Bonnies corner kick but her shot went wide.
In the 33rd minute, Lydia Choban tried her hand with a shot from outside the box but the chance went right to the Canisius goalkeeper, keeping the game at a 0-0 deadlock.
The Bonnies are back in action Sunday, Aug. 22 in their home debut against Iona. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
