Filian’s Goal Sends Bonnies To Second Consecutive A-10 Triumph

Filian’s Goal Sends Bonnies To Second Consecutive A-10 Triumph

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team defeated Rhode Island, 1-0, on a cold and rainy Thursday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.

The Bonnies (6-8-1, 2-4-1 A-10) found what turned out to be the difference in the contest during the 32nd minute. Sophomore Kacie Filian snuck a header just over the goal line off a corner kick from Bella Marra. The ball crossed the line by just inches, but enough to put the Bonnies on the board with a lead that turned out to be insurmountable.

For Filian, it was her third goal of the season, and Marra, the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Performer of the Week, tallied her first assist of the year on the score.

St. Bonaventure out played Rhode Island (3-8-4, 0-5-2 A-10) in the first half, registering seven shots, five of which were on goal. The Bonnies generated numerous opportunities with five corner kicks, finally capitalizing on the fifth corner to jump ahead. Just prior to Filian's goal, Marra very nearly put the Bonnies on the board with a header that crept just wide of the net following an outstanding opportunity.

The Bonnies had a chance to double their lead just three minutes into the second half when Rachel Hutchison sent a shot that ricocheted off the near post, barely missing another score for Bona.

The Rams put pressure on the Bonnies defense through the entire second period, tallying four shots and three corner kicks, but were unable to break through as the backline for the Bonnies remained solid at home once again.

For senior goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm, it was her fourth shutout of the year and 12th of her career, moving her into a tie for third place on the Bonnies all-time shutouts list with Margaret Reif (1994-97).

The Brown and White is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 20 when they head to George Washington to battle the Colonials. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
