The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team hosts Rhode Island Thursday night in the first of two A-10 matchups this week. The Bonnies will then head to George Washington Sunday to do battle with the Colonials.
THE OPPONENT: RHODE ISLAND
The Rams come into Thursday after registering its fourth draw of the season this past weekend, knotting 1-1 with Fordham. URI sophomore Rebecca D'Anna found the back of the net in the first minute of the second half of play off a cross from Tali O'Leary to put the Rams up 1-0. With just two minutes remaining, Fordham struck off a penalty kick by Saige Bingman, and URI went into its third straight overtime contest. In the extra time, neither team could score as the Rams took their fourth tie of the season. Last season, the Bonnies defeated URI, 2-1, on the road with the help of Isabelle LaBarbera's first career goal. Rhode Island was ranked 14th in the 2019 Atlantic 10 women's soccer preseason poll.
THE OPPONENT: GEORGE WASHINGTON
The Colonials battled VCU to a 2-2 double overtime draw this past Sunday in Richmond. After a late comeback goal off a penalty kick from GW's Sofia Pavon tied the score at two with seven minutes to play, GW had a pair of scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but could not find the back of the net as the Colonials went the distance with VCU to finish in a deadlock. The Colonials fell to second in the Atlantic 10, just behind Saint Louis. In last year's matchup with GW, the Bonnies fell 2-1 at the Marra Athletics Complex. George Washington was picked to finish ninth in the 2019 Atlantic 10 women's soccer preseason poll.
LAST TIME OUT
The Brown and White took Richmond into extra time tied 1-1, but senior Bella Marra made quick work of the first overtime period to send the Bonnies to victory. Marra struck just 29 seconds into the extra period to give Bona at 2-1 victory this past Sunday. Just moments after the whistle blew to commence overtime, Sabrina Sousa-Sampson sent a pass from midfield to Kenzie Tarmino on the wing. Tarmino dribbled up the sideline and crossed the ball to Marra who one-touched a shot inside the post past the arms of the outstretched Spiders keeper for the sudden victory. Isabelle LaBarbera netted the game-tying goal in the 80th minute to erase the deficit, allowing her team to score its first Atlantic 10 triumph of the season.
The Bonnies defense has proved itself to be one of the best in the conference this year. Only four teams have given up fewer goals than St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies have allowed 17 goals in 14 games – George Washington and Rhode Island have allowed just one less goal than the Bonnies, and Saint Joseph's has allowed two fewer goals. Saint Louis, who currently sits in first place overall in the conference, has allowed eight goals this season.
ATLANTIC 10 HONORS
Senior Bella Marra and freshman Kenzie Tarmino were recognized on Monday as Atlantic 10 Players of the Week for their performances in Sunday's victory over Richmond. Marra's game-winning goal in overtime earned her A-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors. Tarmino registered the assist on the goal, giving her conference Rookie of the Week honors. For Marra, it was her second career game-winning score, and it was the first since her freshman year. Marra chose a great moment for her first goal of the season, lifting her team to their first conference victory. Tarmino has been solid in her first year for the Bonnies, starting in every game but one so far this season. The freshman defender has tallied three assists on the year, all of which helped notch game-winning goals for her teammates.
The Brown and White's next action will be on Thursday, Oct. 24 when they visit Duquesne. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
