ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team took Richmond into overtime tied 1-1, but it didn't take long for Bella Marra to send the Bonnies to victory with her first goal of the season. Marra struck just 29 seconds into the extra period to give Bona a 2-1 victory under sun-filled skies Sunday at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Just seconds into overtime, Sabrina Sousa-Sampson sent a pass from midfield to Kenzie Tarmino on the wing. Tarmino dribbled up the sideline and crossed the ball to Marra who one-touched a shot inside the post past the arms of the outstretched Spiders keeper for the sudden victory.
St. Bonaventure (5-8-1, 1-4-1 A-10) rallied from a first half deficit to score its first Atlantic 10 triumph of the season.
The Spiders (5-7-2, 2-4-0 A-10) struck first in the 31st minute of the game when Alyssa Walker found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Bonnies registered six shots in the first half to Richmond's two, but were unable to capitalize.
SBU came out strong in the second half, tallying three shots in the first eight minutes. In the 48th minute, Bella May sent a corner kick into the box to Marra, whose header sailed wide left of the goal.
The Bonnies kept the pressure on in the second half until they were finally able to break through with an Isabelle LaBarbera goal in the 80th minute to knot the game at 1-1.
LaBarbera sent a shot from the upper corner of the box that ricocheted off the top crossbar and into the net for her first goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score again before the end of regulation, but overtime lasted less than 30 seconds thanks to Marra's second career game-winner, her first since her freshman year.
"It's awesome to be rewarded for hard work," head coach Steve Brdarski said. "Our girls have been training hard, practicing hard, doing everything we've asked them to do. Two great goals today and we were able to finish it off. It's great to see the girls rewarded for continuing to grind and work hard every day."
The Brown and White's next action will be on Thursday, Oct. 17 when they host Rhode Island in an A-10 matchup. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
