Early Goal Sends Dayton Past Bonnies, 1-0

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team fell to Dayton, 1-0, on an early goal in the first half Thursday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.

The Flyers (4-6-2, 2-1-1 A-10) jumped in front in the 17th minute of the game when Alexis Goins snuck a header just over a leaping goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm for her fifth goal of the season, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Dayton was dominant in the first 20 minutes of the match, registering six shots before the Bonnies (4-7-1, 0-3-1) could put together perhaps their best scoring opportunity of the night.

In the 20th minute, Maddie Mason watched her header ricochet off the right post on a free kick. 16 minutes later, Mason sent a header just over the crossbar on a corner kick from Bella May.

The Flyers did not allow many opportunities for the Bonnies to even the score after halftime, limiting the Brown and White to four shots after intermission while the visitors put together six shot attempts in the final 45 minutes.

Maddie Mason led the Bonnies with two shot attempts while goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm was consistently peppered with shots by the Flyers and finished with five saves.

The Bonnies had a chance in the final seconds to knot up the contest off a corner kick, but a defender was able to send the ball out of bounds as time expired.

It is a quick turnaround for the Bonnies as they travel to Saint Louis Sunday, Oct. 6 to battle the first place Billikens. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
