BRONX, N.Y. – A penalty kick goal with less than six minutes to play proved to be the difference as the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener at Fordham Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
Solid scoring opportunities were at a minimum through the first 84 minutes of play before Fordham was awarded a corner kick in the 85th minute. The Bonnies appeared to have cleared the ball from trouble, but a handball in the box was called which allowed the Rams a penalty kick opportunity.
Bonnies goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm was able to get a piece of Margaret Rougley's attempt, but the shot deflected into the net for the deciding tally.
St. Bonaventure (4-5, 0-1 A-10) could not muster much offensive traction on the day, being outshot 10-3. Kelly Lamorte made one save to keep a clean sheet for Fordham (2-6-2, 1-0).
Malcolm turned away five shots with only the PK as a blemish on her stat line.
Bona returns home for a Thursday night match vs. Saint Joseph's under the lights at the Marra Athletics Complex. That contest is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
