Unlucky Early Goal Costs Bonnies in 1-0 Setback at Canisius

BUFFALO – A fortunate bounce - for the hosts - in the early minutes found the back of the net for Canisius and proved to be the difference in a 1-0 decision over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team Thursday night in non-conference action.

Canisius (3-2) jumped in front early in the sixth minute on a bit of a fluke goal. A long crossing attempt from Magdalen Canitia deflected off the crossbar and, with the late evening sun shining right in the eyes of the Bonaventure keeper, redirected into the net.

St. Bonaventure (3-4) owned more possession time and fired five shots during the first half, two on net that Canisius keeper Alana Rossi turned away.

Lauren Malcolm kept the Bonnies within striking distance in the 60th minute as the senior keeper denied a point blank shot attempt, then also stopped the rebound from close range to keep the deficit at just one.

Canisius controlled the pace for much of the second half, but the Bonnies did spend much of the waning three minutes in the Canisius half without being able to find the goal they needed for the equalizer.

The teams were even in shot attempts, 5-5, through 45 minutes, but the Griffs had all of the quality chances in the second period and finished the contest with a 16-6 advantage in the shot category while Bonaventure had four corner kick opportunities to Canisius' three.

After the unlucky goal early, Malcolm was strong in net and made 11 saves for the Bonnies to become the fourth player in program history to surpass 400 career saves.

The Bonnies return home on Sunday where they look to stay perfect on the season. St. Bonaventure plays host to Merrimack in a special late morning start with kickoff time at the Marra Athletic Complex set for 11 a.m. Sunday's match is part of the season's only doubleheader with the Bona men's team as well with that game set to follow.
