ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Freshman Rachel Hutchison made her first career goal a memorable one as it was the difference for the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team in a 1-0 victory over Valparaiso Friday night at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies improved to 3-2 on the season while Valpo dropped to 0-4-1.
Bona brought the pressure early, attacking from the opening kick.
It wouldn't take long for the Bonnies to break through as Hutchison posted her goal in just the sixth minute.
A loose ball rebounded to Alex Thompson and Bella May sent a service to the right of the net and Hutchison was the first to it – she got around the traffic and got enough momentum on her effort to squeak to past the keeper into the corner of the net for the score.
Valpo placed three shots on goal during the second half, but Bonnies keeper Lauren Malcolm stood her ground. She had five saves on the night.
For Malcolm, it was her 10th career clean sheet as she passed Megan Junker '13 for fifth all-time in shutouts.
Next up for the Bonnies is a quick turnaround as they make the short trip to Ithaca for a battle at Cornell Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
