BUFFALO – St. Bonaventure women's soccer seniors Lauren Malcolm and Maddie Mason were named Western New York Women's Division I Co-Players of the Week by the Buffalo News for their roles in defeating Buffalo in the Bonnies women's soccer home opener Aug. 30.
The Bonnies used a stellar performance in net from senior goalkeeper Malcolm who made six saves, four of which came in the second half. Malcolm recorded two key saves within three minutes of each other to keep the score knotted at 0-0 in the 73rd minute. She was able to fend off the constant pressure of the Bulls offense to notch her first shutout of the season.
In the 76th minute, Mason received a free kick in front and headed it past the Bulls keeper for the deciding score. For Mason, it was her second career goal and first game-winner. She also had a pair of key defensive plays down the stretch, blocking Buffalo shots to help maintain the shutout. She played the full 90 minutes as well in the match.
The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team returns home when it hosts Valparaiso Friday night. The Bonnies and Crusaders will meet at the Marra Athletics Complex with kickoff starting at 7:00 p.m.
