ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Maddie Mason's header goal in the 76th minute proved to be the difference Friday night at the Marra Athletics Complex as the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team seized a 1-0 victory over Buffalo.
In front of a packed crowd on a beautiful evening for soccer, the Bonnies punched in the only score of the night on a set piece between the senior Mason and one of the team's freshmen.
First-year Bonnies defender Kenzie Tarmino stepped up and whipped in a free kick from the left side of the field into the center of the box where Mason got a head to the ball and found the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Friday marked the first time the Bonnies have scored a victory over the Bulls since 2015.
Forward Sydney Cerza had a chance to put the Bonnies ahead early with a shot at the top of the box but it sailed just high.
The Bonnies (2-1) used a stellar performance in net from senior goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm who made six saves en route to her first shutout of the season.
The win gives Bona its second consecutive triumph after winning at Youngstown State, 3-1, last Sunday.
Senior Lauren Malcolm earned a clean sheet with six saves on the night. The effort gives Malcolm nine career shutouts, ranking sixth in program history.
The Bonnies are back in action on Monday, Sept. 2 on the road at Iona. That match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
