ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Visiting VCU scored just before halftime and then added two second half tallies to take a 3-0 win over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team Thursday night at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Samantha Jerabek led the visitors (6-2-0, 1-0 Atlantic 10) with two goals and an assist.
Midway through the second half, VCU had its first true opportunity when a Bonaventure foul set up a free kick. Emma Kirschner drove a rocket right on net that was caught by goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm to keep things scoreless.
VCU would crack into the scoring column just before halftime, however. With just over a minute remaining before the whistle, Susanna Friedrichs sent a tremendous cross throw the box that found the foot of Samantha Jerabek who delivered a perfect strike to the far post for a 1-0 advantage.
After intermission, St. Bonaventure went on the attack in the opening minute as Emily Foltz had a nice attack to begin the second half, but a slide tackle just outside the box ended the threat.
In the 54th minute, Mariah Marrero teamed with Jessica Scruggs on a pass to the far side where Scruggs ripped her attempt from the top of the box. The shot was turned away by the VCU keeper, however, with no chance for a rebound.
VCU struck for another score in the 60th minute when Jerabek controlled a loose ball in front and punched it back to Alyssa Tallent who drove a shot past the keeper for a 2-0 edge.
The Rams added a score of insurance in the 79th minute for the final goal of the game.
For the Bonnies, a pair of players made their returns to action from injury. Sophomore Rachel Collins, who played in over 800 minutes last year, made her first appearance of the season with 31 minutes off the bench. Bella May, who had been sidelined since the season-opener, saw 31 minutes as well and made multiple attacks for the Brown and White.
Malcolm finished with five saves for the Bonnies.
St. Bonaventure is next in action at Richmond on Sunday at 1 p.m.
