Three Keys To The Game:
- Mariah Marrero: The senior delivered her second goal of the season off a set piece following a Bulls foul.
- Lauren Malcolm: The Bonnies keeper had a tough task on Friday. Overall, the Bulls took 22 shots, and Malcolm made eight saves.
- Mia Thatcher: Still getting her feet wet in college, the freshman delivered one of her stronger performances of the season. Though she didn't get the starting nod, each time she checked in she gave the Bonnies a jolt of energy off the bench, and her minutes late in the first helped earn St. Bonaventure its only goal of the game.
BUFFALO — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team fell to the Buffalo Bulls, 3-1, on Friday night at UB Stadium. Despite a goal by Mariah Marrero late in the first half to cut the deficit before at halftime, the Bonnies couldn't overcome a flurry of attacks by the Bulls.
The Bulls (6-1) made a statement early on in the eighth minute when Carissima Cutrona started the scoring. A shot by UB's Marcy Barberic forced a diving save by Bona keeper Lauren Malcolm, but the rebound bounced to Cutrona who drove a shot into the bottom right corner of the net for an early lead.
Twelve minutes later, the Bulls increased their advantage to 2-0 when Barberic came up with a steal and crossed one into the opposite corner.
Despite the deficit, the Bonnies didn't go into the half quietly.
In the 30th minute, a great ball from freshman Carolyn Brussel over the top of the defense to Marrero drew a Bulls foul as she made her way into the attacking zone which set the Bonnies up for a crucial free kick. Maddie Mason fired off a beautiful ball from just outside the upper left corner of the goalie box, and after it bounced around in traffic for a bit, the loose ball eventually found the foot of Marrero and she punched an effort through several players in front for her second goal of the season.
A great defensive stand by the Bonnies kept it 2-1 heading into halftime.
But the Bulls kept up their mantra of striking early. Just four minutes into the second half, Cutrona stole the ball and found the top right corner for her second goal of the game.
Cutrona and Barberic, who came up with her second assist of the game on Cutrona's second-half goal, consistently led the Bulls charge.
The Bonnies won't hit the pitch again until next Thursday, Sept. 20 when they square off against VCU at home for the start of Atlantic 10 play. They have Sunday off this weekend for the first and only time this season.
