ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Kaili Gregory's low-arcing free kick in the 100th minute bent inside the post and into the back of the net to send visiting Cornell to a 2-1 overtime victory over the St. Bonaventure women's soccer team Friday night at the Marra Athletics Complex.
St. Bonaventure (0-2-1) seized the lead first just over five minutes before halftime on the first goal of the year from junior Bella Marra. It was Marra's first goal since her freshman season as she battled back from injuries a year ago to return this season.
Fellow junior Maddie Mason started the Bonnies' scoring play with a line drive from just past midfield that ricocheted off the crossbar. With the Cornell keeper out of position following a leaping attempt for Mason's shot, Marra snuck behind the defense and into position. She took control of the rebound from inside 10 yards, heading the ball into the corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
That lead would stick until the 65th minute when Cornell's Naomi Jaffe went near post following a drive through traffic to tie the contest.
Four minutes later, the Bonnies had an opportunity as Mia Thatcher served a cross through traffic to Marra who rocketed a shot just over the crossbar. Just prior to that, Dareion Marrison delivered a beautiful pass to Mariah Marrero near the top of the 18-yard box and the senior ripped a shot just wide.
In the final minute of regulation, Emily Foltz gave the hosts another chance with a shot placed on net, one of two on the night, that was turned away by the Cornell keeper.
In extra time, Cornell controlled the momentum with four shots during the period. A Bonaventure foul with just over a minute left in the first overtime set up Gregory for the game-winning goal that hit the net at the 99:04 mark of the match.
Cornell owned an 11-9 edge in shots for the night and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Lauren Malcolm made six saves for St. Bonaventure while Meghan Kennedy earned the win with three for the Big Red.
SBU travels to UMass-Lowell Sunday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. opening kick.
