ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – It was a rainy night at the Marra Athletics Complex that saw a nearly 45-minute lightning delay, but the conditions suited the St. Bonaventure University women's soccer team just fine as the Bonnies won, 2-0, over Davidson Thursday.
A trio of freshmen were key features in the victory – Bella Marra tallied her first career goal, classmate Sabrina Sousa-Sampson added an insurance score and Lauren Malcolm turned in a clean sheet with nine saves.
Senior Jennifer Morris was also central to the win – the veteran set up both Bonnies goals off corner kicks. On the first goal, Morris found Marra right in front where the freshman blasted a shot off the cross bar and over the goal line for the 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
With just under 10 minutes to go, the teams headed inside for approximately 45 minutes due to lightning in the area.
When the teams returned the pitch, the Bonnies found insurance on another set piece from Morris. This time the corner came from the far side of the field, where Sousa-Sampson broke through multiple players in front for the score and a two-goal advantage before intermission.
While Davidson (5-10-1, 1-5-1) had several strong chances, Malcolm stood tall in net with many impressive saves for her second career shutout.
Davidson held a 12-10 advantage in shots, but the Bonnies outshot the Wildcats by a 6-4 margin after halftime.
Next up for the Bonnies is Senior Day on Sunday afternoon when Dayton visits for a 1 p.m. start.
