LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite jumping out to an early 5-1 lead, the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-16 decision to Bucknell on Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field.
The loss is the Brown and White's third in a row as they slip to 4-6 on the season. Bucknell, with the win, its second in a row, improves to 9-3 overall.
Leading the way for the St. Bonaventure on the offensive end was sophomore Christine Hanley. Hanley set a new career-high scoring six goals, which ties junior Molly Hastrich for the most goals scored by a player in a game this season. Freshman Danielle Drabin and Emily Kane had big offensively as well, tallying three goals apiece in the loss.
For Bucknell, junior Carol Donahue and senior Bonnie Buechel led the Bison offensive attack with five goals apiece to earn the win.
Getting the start in net for the Brown and White was junior Tori Waheibi. Waheibi garnered over 48 minutes of playing time allowing 20 goals to take the loss. Freshman Victoria Morgan came in the game for the remaining 11:45 of the contest allowing just one goal while making three saves.
The Bonnies were dominated in two key areas statistically. Bucknell out-shot St. Bonaventure 42-28 and held a hug edge in draw controls 26-12 over the Brown and White.
Things looked good for the visitors early on, as the Bonnies jumped out of the gates to an early lead. Drabin would score her first two goals of the afternoon within one minute of each other to stake St. Bonaventure to a 5-1 lead with 24:36 left in the first half.
The Bison would have a quick answer, however, scoring the next four goals of the game. Donahue's first goal of the game would tie the contest up at 5-5 with 19:59 remaining in the first.
Both teams would trade scores for the remainder of the first half. A late unassisted tally by Buechel would give Bucknell a 12-10 advantage going into intermission.
The second half would be where things fell apart for the Brown and White. The Bison would score five of the first six goals to start the second half to take a 17-11 lead with 19:13 left in the second half.
A goal by sophomore Julia Braun would extend Bucknell's lead up to 20-13 with just 11:45 to go in the game.
The Bonnies would score a few more goals down the stretch, but would not come within five of Bucknell the rest of the way.
Sophomore Alyssa DeLorenz got the start in net for the Bison, letting up all 16 goals while making nine saves in the contest to pick up the win.
The Brown and White will return home after a three-game road trip to take on Saint Joseph's in their Atlantic 10 home opener on Friday, April 3. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. and can be followed through Game Tracker on www.GOBONNIES.com.
