ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell to the La Salle Explorers, 22-5, on Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
"Proud of the effort, we came out with a good start again which was what we needed," St. Bonaventure head coach Jason Levesque said. "Unfortunately we're still inconsistent through the course of the game and the strong teams in our conference will capitalize just about every time we give them that extra opportunity to do so, whether a turnover, a missed assignment, a new shot clock or whatever the case may be. We didn't do ourselves any favors by putting them on the line for so many free positions either. We did keep battling until the end, and that's what we've asked of them. We'll continue to learn our lessons and continue to move forward from here."
The first 10 minutes of the game were a back-and-forth affair. La Salle (4-8, 2-5 A-10) started out on a 2-0 run but the Bonnies (2-9, 0-7) answered right back with back-to-back goals to tie the game courtesy of Destinee Johnson and Maddie Mazur.
But the Explorers never let it get close again. The visitors went on a 20-3 run to close out the game, including 11 straight scores from the 9:54 mark in the first to the 23-minute mark in the second.
Mazur led the Bonnies offensive attack on the afternoon, netting two of the five SBU goals. Courtney Fox had a goal and an assist.
Postgame, the Bonnies honored the 10 graduating seniors from the 2021 class. Collectively, the group suited up for 353 games over their respective careers.
Johnson will finish in the all-time top 20 for points, goals and assists. Ashley Easterday will finish in the all-time top 25 for points and goals, and Clarke will finish sixth in total saves.
SBU has one more contest to go in 2021, a road test against a tough UMass team Friday, April 23
