ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The St. Bonaventure Bonnies women's lacrosse team was outmatched by UMass on Saturday at the Marra Athletics Complex, falling 21-9.
"Our team had a much higher compete level today," St. Bonaventure head coach Jason Levesque said. "I'm very proud of the group, regrouping the way we did after a bit of a lackluster performance last time out. We didn't have a great start, but credit UMASS, there's a reason they've won the regular season or tournament championship or both almost every season since 2009. They're a very strong program with a ton of depth and great coaching. They jumped on us and stayed on us all game. I'm proud of the girls putting up a fight the way they did today. We continue to learn some valuable lessons that will serve us well moving forward."
UMass (8-2, 3-0 A-10) took control early in the game, scoring six straight goals in the first five minutes to take a 6-0 lead, and never looked back.
The Bonnies (2-6, 0-4) were able to hang tough in the first half, fighting back to just an 8-3 deficit after goals from Sarah Owens, Abby Hiltz and Destinee Johnson, but the Minutewomen answered the Bona run with an 8-0 run of their own to take an eventual 16-4 lead at the half.
Nora Anderson was a bright spot for the Bonnies in the second half. The sophomore netted her first career hat trick over the remaining 30 minutes with two free position goals and another unassisted goal. It was the seventh multi-goal game over her career and her fourth of the season.
In net, the Bonnies used all three goalkeepers for the second straight game. Savannah Clarke and Hayley McIntyre tied for the team lead with three saves over a combined 36 minutes while Ashley Herrick collected two over 22 minutes.
A main difference of the game came in the draw control circle. UMass earned a 27-4 advantage on the afternoon.
Next up, the Bonnies head to Duquesne Sunday, April 11 at 10 a.m. to take on the Dukes for the second time this season. They fell to Duquesne 15-8 at home on March 2.
