Bonnies Fall in Conference Opener

Bonnies Fall in Conference Opener

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — After a tightly-fought, defensive battle during the first half, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies women's lacrosse team couldn't hold off a late Duquesne Dukes run, eventually falling, 15-8, in the Atlantic 10 opener Friday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

The Bonnies (2-3, 0-1 A-10), went into halftime down just 6-3 despite falling behind 5-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game.

After the opening Dukes salvo, SBU answered with a 3-0 run of its own, spurred by two goals from sophomore Nora Anderson.

Anderson netted the first off the free position while the second came off a feed from Courtney Fox. Fox added her own name to the scoring tally with a goal off an assist from Maddie Mazur.

After halftime, it was a back-and-forth affair.

The Bonnies struck first with an unassisted score from senior Destinee Johnson and another goal off the stick of sophomore Caroline Yoder made it a 7-5 game with 22 minutes remaining.

But that's when the Dukes (2-0, 1-0) opened things up and never looked back. The visitors went on an 8-2 run over the next 19 minutes to make it 15-7.

The Bonnies did show a bit of life with back-to-back goals from freshman Abby Hiltz and Fox to break up the run and push the score to 11-7 with nearly 10 minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough as the Dukes scored the next four goals to put the game out of reach.

"They came out fast, strong and hard and it took us almost ten minutes to settle into the game," St. Bonaventure head coach Jason Levesuqe said. "One of many lessons learned today. Really was proud to see the push back though, and the team battle and compete after spotting them a 5-0 lead. We were able to start the second fairly well, close the gap a bit, but a few untimely miscues really bit us and every time we'd inch closer, get a couple opportunities, they'd pull away and capitalize on their own. Lessons to be learned for sure for our group. We'll regroup and refocus our efforts on a really strong St. Joseph's squad Sunday."

When the dust settled, the Bonnies were only outshot 29-22, collected 12 of 25 draw controls, and only had two fewer ground balls, 24-22.

In net, senior Savannah Clarke made eight saves over the full 60 minutes of action on 23 total shots faced.

Offensively, Hiltz kept her point streak alive. The freshman has scored in all five games of her career since arriving on campus.

To add to the impressive freshman scoring accomplishments, Mazur has scored in three straight games and, had a team-high three caused turnovers on the afternoon as well.

The Bonnies return to action on Sunday when they face off against conference foe Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. at the Marra Athletics complex to end a three-game home stand. The game will air live on ESPN+.
