ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell to the UAlbany Great Danes, 16-2, on Thursday in the state capital.
The Bonnies (0-2) got off to a solid start after a quick goal from freshman attack Abby Hiltz put them up 1-0 two minutes into the action.
The Great Danes (1-1) proved formidable, though, and bounced back quickly with three goals of their own to take a 3-1 lead seven minutes in.
Hiltz answered with her second goal of the afternoon, and third of the young season, drawing it back to 3-2, but UAlbany never let the Bonnies find the back of the net again.
The Great Danes closed the game on a 13-0 run to close out their first win of the season.
"We played pretty well for the first quarter of the game or so, made some plays, had some good opportunities, but couldn't cash in," Bonnies head coach Jason Levesque said. "As the game progressed, turnovers in transition after some good defensive stands really bit us as they capitalized. As they extended the lead, and we turned over the ball a couple more times, they continued to make us pay on the scoreboard. Turnovers, mistakes, miscues, they're gonna happen from time to time. We need to minimize those instances moving forward. We're a young group, and these experiences will certainly teach us some lessons. Overall, obviously not the result we're looking for, though had a higher compete level, and I'm proud of the team for that. We'll take the positives, correct the mistakes and move forward."
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Herrick had 10 saves in the contest, the third time in her career she's had double digit saves.
Freshman defender Paige Szymusiak also earned her first career start.
St. Bonaventure is next scheduled to play at home vs Akron on Saturday, March 20 at 2 p.m.
