Though no events or games are taking place this fall on campus, St. Bonaventure student-athletes still have great stories to tell. During the fall semester, GoBonnies.com will feature members from each of our 17 Division I teams – how they're adjusting to the new norms of campus life, preparing for the upcoming seasons and more.
In this edition, we feature women's lacrosse sophomore Emily Mahon.
Mahon made her Bonnies debut earlier this year, making five starts and appearing in all seven games as the Bonnies went 5-2 before the spring sports shutdown. A native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., she was named Poughkeepsie Journal All-Star Honorable Mention and Hudson Valley Sports Report Second Team All-Star prior to committing to Bonaventure.
What did you do over the spring/summer to stay in shape and get ready to get back to practices this fall?
Obviously, with the quarantine, all of gyms were closed and continue to be closed so I had to get a little bit creative. I went on walks with my dog, ran through my neighborhood, and did some kayaking.
What was one good thing that came out of the spring sports shutdown and odd summer for you? Did you develop any new hobbies/interests?
I did a lot of driving actually. A lot of the time I just needed to get out of the house and just drove to new places. I would usually just sit in the car to adhere to social distancing, but I got to see a lot of new places on Long Island and Upstate New York.
What messages/advice have your coaches given you for staying positive during these tough times?
Coach Levesque really emphasizes following the rules now so that we can still play in the spring. He was really focused on making sure that we can get anything we can competition-wise in the spring. His message was to do all the right things now so that we can get out there and do what we love in the spring.
Even though there are no competitions this fall, how excited were you to get back to workouts with your team? Do you look at practices and work with your teammates any differently since the COVID shutdown?
Words cannot express how excited I was to be back with my teammates, even if it's only in small groups or just a quick wave on the way to class. Obviously, COVID is changing things but I will embrace any little thing I can get to move forward.
What is your favorite class at Bonaventure?
I'm a history and education double major, so I have to take a lot of history courses and that is my absolute favorite subject so any history course is always enjoyable, but this year I am taking a historiography course which will give the class an opportunity to get first-hand experience looking at primary evidence and learn how history is created which is really interesting to me.
