Though no events or games are taking place this fall on campus, St. Bonaventure student-athletes still have great stories to tell. During the fall semester, GoBonnies.com will feature members from each of our 17 Division I teams – how they're adjusting to the new norms of campus life, preparing for the upcoming seasons and more.
In this edition, we feature women's lacrosse sophomore Ashley Herrick.
The New Hampshire native made her collegiate debut last spring, and though the season was cut short, she made an impact in net. She made at least seven saves in all five games she played, stopping 51 percent of the shots against her. She also ranked fifth in the Atlantic 10 with 52 total saves.
How have you adapted to the new changes on campus regarding COVID-19 safety protocols? Have they helped make you feel safer since coming back?
The changes on campus regarding COVID-19 have been very different than the previous semesters, but I felt over the summer that I got used to the safety protocols, such as wearing a mask and social distancing. They have helped me feel safer since coming back.
What did you do over the spring/summer to stay in shape and get ready to get back to practices this fall (and was it difficult to find places to workout/practice because of quarantines)?
I tried to stay active all summer with running, biking and hiking, but it was difficult to find the opportunity to play lacrosse with other people. Instead, I played a lot of wall ball.
What was one good thing that came out of the spring sports shutdown and odd summer for you? Did you develop any new hobbies/interests?
One good thing that came out of the shutdown in the spring was the opportunity to spend a lot of time with my family; we recently moved across the country, so it gave us a lot of time to explore the new area.
Even though there are no competitions this fall, how excited are you to get back to workouts with your team? Do you look at practices and work with your teammates any differently since the COVID shutdown?
I am very excited to workout with the team again. I don't look at workouts and practices any differently without competitions this fall. If we can play in the spring, the work we do in the fall will pay off.
What is your favorite class at Bonaventure and why (now or previously)?
My favorite class at Bonaventure was The Way of Francis and Clare with Professor Donius. Despite taking it last spring when it became fully online, Professor Donius kept it engaging and interesting.
