BUFFALO – Host Canisius started fast and never looked back on the way to a 17-7 victory Wednesday afternoon.
Erika Sherwood had two goals and three draw controls while five other Bonnies scored during the contest.
We just didn't have it tonight, unfortunately, St. Bonaventure head coach Jason Levesque said. "We made too many mistakes and they capitalized. The good thing is that our mistakes are very correctable. We'll take the lessons learned and get ready for our next game. We'll get a good couple of practices in and go from there."
Marissa Malvaso scored first two goals to give the Golden Griffs a 2-0 lead five minutes in. The Bonnies looked primed to get on the board on a rifled shot by Destinee Johnson right on, but it was turned away by Lauren Gilbert at the 23:55 mark of the half.
Canisius scooped up the loose ball and marched down the field for another score as part of what became a 5-0 run to begin the game.
Johnson finally got the Bonnies into the scoring column when she found the back of the cage off a free position shot 17:47 before the half, cutting the Bona deficit to four.
Ashley Easterday scored seven minutes later to bring the score to 6-2, but Canisius remained in control and took an 11-2 advantage into halftime.
The Griffs (1-5) continued their roll into the second half, scoring the first three goals of the period and holding the Bonnies off the board for over 11 minutes before Stevie Siluano broke the drought.
The Bonnies return home Saturday morning to face Butler. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
