RICHMOND, Va. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell, 17-5, to the VCU Rams Friday evening in a road contest at Cary Street Field.
The Rams (5-9, 2-5 A-10) jumped out to a big lead early, scoring six goals over the first 10 minutes to take a 6-0 advantage that forced a Bonnies timeout.
The Bonnies (1-14, 0-7 A-10) bounced back from the early blow, answering with two goals of their own to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Both scores came off the stick of sophomore Ashley Easterday. Assisted by Rylee Arnold on the first and Destinee Johnson on the second, the New Jersey native notched her 18th and 19th goals of the season.
But VCU produced a knock-out blow right before halftime. Ryan Shaughnessy scored with 28 seconds left on the clock, then struck again 10 seconds later to give the Rams an 8-2 cushion heading into the break.
After halftime, VCU expanded on their lead with three more quick goals to open the game up to 11-2.
The Bonnies tried to battle their way back into it.
An unassisted goal from Johnson, followed by two unassisted goals from Rylee Arnold, led the Bonnies on a three-goal scoring run to cut the lead to 11-5.
For Arnold, her second goal of the day was the 75th of her career, making her just the 17th Bonnie to reach that mark. Johnson secured her ninth multi-point game of the season, and brought her season total to 35.
Those would be the last tallies of the day for the Bonnies offense. VCU closed the game on a 6-0 scoring run, ultimately walking away with a 17-5 win.
St. Bonaventure performed well in the draw control circle, being outdrawn 13-11. Easterday and Olivia MacDonald tied for the team lead with four. The Bonnies also caused 7 turnovers, including four from senior captain Kathryn Yoder to lead all players on the day.
In net, Savannah Clarke had 11 saves on 36 shots faced for a save percentage of .393.
The Bonnies have a quick turnaround, returning home Sunday to take on Duquesne at noon for Senior Day and the home finale at the Marra Athletics Complex.
