The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team opens its 2019 season by hosting the Lafayette College Leopards on Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Bonnies return all four of their top goal scorers from last season, led by senior Rylee Arnold who anchored the offense with 26 goals despite missing the final three games of the season. Plus, a pair of impressive freshmen from last season, Ashley Easterday and Julia Davidson, return with an extra year of experience after scoring 20 and 11 goals respectively, during their debut seasons.
YODER SETTING THE TONE
With a relatively inexperienced defensive unit, Bonnies head coach Chelsea Rosiek will rely on senior Kathryn Yoder to mentor off the field and do the dirty work on game day. After an impressive junior campaign that saw her named to the Atlantic 10 Second-Team All-Conference defensive squad, the Bonnies will need her to repeat that performance in her last season.
NEW FACES IN THE CAGE
After graduating senior goalkeeper Morgan Conroy, who finished second all-time with 630 career saves and a .464 save percentage, the Bonnies will turn to sophomore Savannah Clarke to anchor the defensive unit. Clarke played 217 minutes last season, staring one game and had a save percentage of .398. Freshman Hayley McIntyre also joins the fray. The Whitby, Ontario native posted a 6.33 GAA over her final two high school seasons.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Leopards got the better of the Bonnies last season, 13-5, when they squared off in Easton, Pa. Led by Rylee Arnold's two goals, the Bonnies were off to a strong start, down only 3-2 with 8:55 remaining the first half, but couldn't bounce back after a 3-0 Lafayette run before halftime.
The Leopards are coming off a 5-12 season and a 2-7 finish in the Patriot League. Led by 11th-year head coach Alison Fisher, Lafayette will again lean on senior attack Jane Kirby who led the team with 54 goals and 60 points last year. Outside of Kirby, the Leopards also return senior Emma Novick who scored 43 goals last season and senior Anna Stein who posted 25 assists. In the cage, sophomore Quinn Lacy returns after an impressive .407 save percentage over 747 minutes as a freshman.
