NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Iona pulled away in the final 10 minutes to earn a hard-fought win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.
It was just an 11-10 Iona lead when the Gaels scored five unanswered goals between the 7:09 and 3:48 marks of the second half to pull away.
Freshman Rachel Perla's second goal of the game had given the Bonnies a 5-3 lead, but the Gaels were able to pull even at 5-5 by halftime.
Early in the second half, St. Bonaventure got goals from Mikayla Place and LeighAnn Stauffer to tie the game at 7-7. Iona, however, then scored four straight to make it an 11-7 game. The Bonnies again clawed back, using goals from Place, Stauffer and Gabrielle Bradley to pull within 11-10 with 9:50 remaining in regulation time.
Place, Perla, Stauffer, Bradley and Kaitlin Jennings each scored a pair of goals for St. Bonaventure. Maddison Appel and Mary Maestri scored one goal apiece, and freshman goalkeeper Morgan Conroy made 12 saves.
St. Bonaventure is now 0-3. The Bonnies will return home to host Canisius in their home opener this Tuesday, March 10, at 4:00 at the Marra Athletics Fields Complex.
