RICHMOND, Va. - St. Bonaventure dropped its final game of the regular season, falling at Richmond, 80-52, while clinching fourth place in the Atlantic 10 East division.
After establishing a 42-22 lead coming out of the intermission, the Spiders took a 44-25 lead with 16:18 remaining. Richmond then mounted a 12-4 run to pull away from the Bonnies, 56-29, at the 12:53 mark.
St. Bonaventure responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a jumper from freshman forward Audrey Latendresse, cutting the deficit to 20, 56-36, with 11:14 remaining. Over the next 6:45, the Spiders mounted a 19-5 run to go ahead 75-41 with 4:24 left, which would seal the Richmond victory.
The Bonnies shot 39 percent (20-51) from the field and only 10 percent (1-10) from behind the arc. Shooting 52 percent (31-59) from the field, Richmond also hit 8-17 (47 percent) from long range.
Junior guard Caitlin Crist poured in 12 points to lead the Bonnies, while pulling down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Stephanie Merlo was the only other St. Bonaventure player in double figures with 10 points to go with three rebounds. Senior forward Jade Humble pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, as the Spiders won the battle of the boards, 36-34.
The Bonnies committed 23 turnovers, which Richmond converted into 26 points. The Bonnies netted 13 points on 15 Spider turnovers.
Amber Goppert and Saona Chapman led Richmond with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
With the loss, St. Bonaventure finished the season 9-18 overall and 5-11 in A-10 play. Richmond improved to 19-8 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
The Bonnies return to action on Friday, March 5 when they take on La Salle in the opening round of the A-10 Tournament on the campus of Saint Joseph's. Tip off is slated for noon.
