Women's Basketball Set To Take On Davidson In First Round Of A-10 Tournament

The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team begins its run in the 2021 Atlantic 10 Tournament Wednesday, March 10 against Davidson in Richmond on campus at VCU. Tip is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPN+.

The Bonnies dropped a pair of contests on the road to Saint Joseph's and La Salle to end the regular season Feb. 26 and 28, respectively. The Bonnies battled the Hawks to the wire but fell short at the end, 66-63, Friday evening. In the regular season finale Sunday Feb. 28, the Bonnies were defeated by La Salle, 77-51.

Junior Asianae Johnson finished the regular season ranked eighth in the A-10 in free throw percentage (75.6 percent), 11th overall and first among guards in field goal percentage (47.5 percent), 13th in scoring (13.3 ppg) and 13th in assists (3.0 apg). To go along with Johnson, teammates Tori Harris and Olivia Brown are among the league's best in other statistical areas. Harris ended the regular season ranked 13th overall and third among guards in rebounding, pulling down 6.7 per game, which also led the Bonnies. Harris also is active on the defensive end, ranking ninth in steals at 1.5 steals per game.

Sophomore Olivia Brown leads the Bonnies with 36 made threes this season and ranked eighth in the A-10, shooting 38.7 percent from beyond the arc.

As a team, the Bonnies rank fifth in steals (7.2 spg) and sixth in field goal percentage (39.8 percent).

The Bonnies are 10-31 all-time in Atlantic 10 Tournament games dating back to when they joined the league in the 1986-87 season. The Bonnies are 0-1 all-time against Davidson in postseason play, having played each other in the first round of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Brown and White's last Atlantic 10 Tournament win was a 54-42 victory against La Salle March 7, 2014.  

• Head coach Gayle Fulks is in her fourth season at the helm of the Davidson women's basketball team. During her tenure with the Wildcats, Fulks has accumulated a record of 53-63. She has led Davidson to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in each of the last two seasons.

• The Wildcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-13 and 5-10 in Atlantic 10 play. Davidson started the season 6-3 overall and 3-0 in A-10 play but finished the year 2-10 overall. The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll.

• Chloe Welch leads the Wildcats offense, averaging 16.2 points per game which ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10. Also averaging double figures for Davidson is Suzi-Rose Deegan at 10.7 points per contest. Sarah Konstans leads the Wildcats in rebounding, pulling down 5.9 boards per game. As a team, Davidson ranks fifth in the A-10 in turnover margin (+.29).

Wednesday's matchup between the Bonnies and the Wildcats will be the 10th meeting overall and third contest between the two teams this season. St. Bonaventure leads the all-time series 6-3 and has won the last three games over the Wildcats. The Bonnies and Davidson played back-to-back Feb. 7 and 8 with the Brown and White taking game one, 71-58, and then winning again in game two, 71-63. Asianae Johnson led the way in both games for the Bonnies, scoring 18 points in game one and 20 points in game two. Also pacing the Bonnies in game one was Tori Harris with 13 points while she and Johnson each grabbed six rebounds. In game two, I'yanna Lops tallied 13 points while Harris (12 points), Deja Francis (11) and Jurnee President (11) each scored in double figures as well.

15 – Sophomore I'yanna Lops registered 15 blocks in her first season to lead the Bonnies.

18 – Johnson scored 18 points in two of the final three games of the regular season. Johnson scored in double figures in 17 games this year.

20 – Johnson and Tori Harris were the lone two Bonnies players to start in all 20 games in the regular season.

63 – Bonnies junior Asianae Johnson is just 63 points away from 1,000 points for her career.

78 – Olivia Brown has made 78 career threes in two seasons with the Bonnies.

The winner of Wednesday's contests moves on to face 5-seed VCU Thursday afternoon. Tip for that game is slated for 2:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+.
