Bonnies Set For Pair Of Home Matchups Against La Salle And Saint Joe's

The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team wraps up a four-game homestand with two more matchups at the Reilly Center Friday and Sunday. The Bonnies welcome La Salle Friday, Jan. 15 with tip scheduled for 12:00 p.m. as the first part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team. Saint Joseph's then visits The RC Sunday, Jan. 17 with tipoff also scheduled for noon.

St. Bonaventure battled Atlantic foes Richmond and VCU last week, falling to the Spiders, 59-58, while taking A-10 preseason favorite VCU to overtime before falling, 69-67. Against Richmond, Asianae Johnson paced the Bona offense with a season-high 18 points while Tori Harris tallied her second double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

In last Sunday's contest against VCU, Harris poured in 18 points and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but her shot bounced in and out. Johnson (15), Deja Francis (13) and Olivia Brown (12) also scored in double figures for the Brown and White. I'yanna Lops chipped in seven points and also hauled in a career-high 12 boards, including seven offensive rebounds.

St. Bonaventure as a team ranks sixth in the A-10 in rebounds per game (38.9) and scoring defense, allowing just 63.3 points per game.

Junior guard Asianae Johnson leads the Bonnies in scoring at 14.1 points per game which ranks 10th in the Atlantic 10. Johnson is also one of most efficient scorers in the A-10, ranking sixth in the league in shooting percentage, hitting at a 45.1 percent clip. Redshirt junior Tori Harris ranks 10th in the A-10 in rebounding, grabbing an average of 7.9 rebounds per game which all best on the Bonnies. Harris is second on the team in scoring and ranks 13th in the A-10, averaging 12.6 points per contest. Her 12.6 ppg scoring average is the second highest among all Atlantic 10 newcomers behind only Emmanuelle Tahane from Rhode Island who is averaging 14.9 points per contest.

• Head coach Mountain MacGillivary is in his third season at the helm of the La Salle women's basketball team. He has posted a 24-48 overall record with the Explorers in two-plus seasons. Prior to taking over at La Salle, MacGillivary spent nine seasons as an assistant at Quinnipiac, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in four out of his last five seasons.

• The Explorers are currently 5-6 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 play. La Salle opened its Atlantic 10 schedule with three consecutive losses against Rhode Island (72-69), UMass (78-61) and Saint Joseph's (65-36). The Explorers snapped their three-game skid with a win Jan. 10 over Saint Joe's, 81-66. The Explorers most recently took down Drexel, 58-55, Jan. 13. La Salle was picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason poll while Claire Jacobs was named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Second Team.

• Entering the week, Jacobs paces the Explorer offense, scoring an average of 15.6 points per game which ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10. Jacobs also ranks fifth in the A-10 in steals (18), eighth in steals per game (1.8) and 10th in free throw percentage (81.3%). Senior Kate Hill is one of the best passers in the league, ranking second in the A-10 in assists (42) and fourth in assists per game (4.2) while also being in the top-five in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.47). As a team, La Salle is second in the A-10 with 87 three pointers made.

Friday's matchup between the Bonnies and the Explorers will be the 33rd meeting all-time between the two schools. La Salle leads the all-time series over St. Bonaventure, 18-14, and have won seven straight over the Bonnies. In St. Bonaventure's Jan. 13, 2018 matchup with La Salle, Mariah Ruff '18 poured in 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 66-63 loss.

• Cindy Griffin is in her 20th season as head coach of the Saint Joseph's women's basketball team and has compiled an overall record of 333-268 with the Hawks. Griffin has led the Hawks to 11 postseason appearances during her tenure and is one of just eight Division I head coaches to lead their alma mater to the NCAA Tournament as a player and a coach.

• The Hawks enter the week with a 3-1 overall record and a 1-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play. Saint Joe's started the season 3-0 with wins over Lincoln (72-64), Monmouth (80-52) and La Salle (65-36) but were tripped up by the Explorers last Sunday, 81-66. The Hawks were picked to finish 13th in the Atlantic 10 this season.

• As a team, Saint Joseph's leads the Atlantic 10 in blocks per game (6.5), free throw percentage (76.1%) and scoring margin (+12.5). The Hawks are second in the A-10 in assists per game (16.8), field goal percentage defense (33.1%) and three-point field goal percentage (36.4%) while they are fourth in rebounding margin (+8.0). Katie Jekot is first in the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88) and is second in assists per game (5.8). Alayna Gribble leads the Hawks in scoring at 16.0 points per game while Gabby Smalls is averaging a double-double at 11.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per contest. Smalls' 10.0 rebounds per game ranks third in the Atlantic 10.

Sunday's matchup between St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's is the 56th meeting all-time between the two programs. The Hawks lead the all-time series over the Bonnies 42-13 and have won the previous four matchups. Last season at the Reilly Center, the contest came down to the final buzzer as Katie Mayock grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the game-winning layup as time expired to give Saint Joe's a 61-60 victory. The Bonnies last defeated the Hawks at the Reilly Center Jan. 27, 2016, 73-67.

2 – Redshirt junior Tori Harris has registered two double-doubles this season. She earned the first of her career with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Binghamton and the second came against Richmond where she scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.

7 – Sophomore I'yanna Lops hauled in seven offensive rebounds as part of her career-high 12 rebounds vs. VCU.

12 – Kaitlyn Parker was a team-best +12 in last Sunday's matchup against VCU.

18 – Asianae Johnson and Deja Francis are tied for the team lead in assists with 18 each.

97 – Senior Emily Calabrese is closing in on the century mark for career games played as she has played in 97 career games entering the weekend.

The Bonnies hit the road for a pair of games next week. The Brown and White head to the Bronx to take on Fordham Friday, Jan. 22 with tip scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Bona then heads south for a matchup with Davidson Sunday, Jan. 24. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
