ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team dropped a 72-58 decision to Richmond Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
Deja Francis scored a team-high 11 points for the Bonnies while Emily Calabrese nearly earned a double-double, tallying 10 points and team-high nine rebounds.
Richmond (14-14, 7-7 A-10) controlled momentum from the opening tip.
The Spiders jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the opening minutes of the contest and led the entire game. Richmond closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run, taking an 18-9 lead into the second.
In the second period, Calabrese's layup with 7:54 on the clock brought the Bonnies back within five, 21-16. Richmond, however, responded with an 11-0 run to extend its lead to double digits, 32-16.
Claire Holt's basket with 31 seconds remaining in the period gave the Spiders a 36-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
It was more of the same in the second half as Richmond grew its lead to as many as 21 with 7:37 on the clock in the third.
Amanda Oliver cut the deficit to 14 with 2:20 left in the third, making a layup and free throw after she was fouled on the shot.
Richmond quickly responded with four straight points to halt the Bonnies (7-20, 4-10) momentum.
Dajah Logan's layup with 4:21 on the clocked capped off a 9-0 Bonnies run and brought the Brown and White back within 11, 61-50.
Once again Richmond countered with a three-point play from Alex Parsons, stopping any chance for a Bonnies comeback.
Jaide Hinds-Clarke notched a double-double to lead the Spiders with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bonnies are back in action Wednesday, Feb. 26 on the road at Dayton. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
