ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team kicked off the 2019-20 season with a 68-54 victory over Cortland in Wednesday night's exhibition game behind three Bonnies scoring in double figures.
A slow start saw the Bonnies trailing by seven at the end of the first quarter, 21-14. The rust came off in the second and third quarters, however.
The Bonnies used a 12-0 run to take the lead, closing out the first half with a six-point edge, 34-28. Johnson was key in the Bona comeback with 12 first half points, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 in the first half and hauled in four rebounds.
Coming out of the break, the Bonnies outscored the Red Dragons, 23-9, in the third quarter to pull away, holding a 57-37 advantage heading into the final period.
The Bonnies shot 43 percent from the floor (28-for-66) on Wednesday evening and outrebounded Cortland, 44-32. The Bona defense stepped up in the second half and forced a total of 18 turnovers on the night.
"I'm glad that we flashed some positive signs for a couple minutes and got some turnovers as well as some easy baskets," head coach Jesse Fleming said, "But if we want to have an opportunity to have success against a team like St. John's in six days, we are crazy if we're going to have this kind of performance. We have a lot of work to do but I'm glad we were able to get the win."
The 2019-20 season officially opens Tuesday night when the Bonnies host St. John's at the Reilly Center. Tip is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and is the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team.
