ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – In the past 10 days, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team has faced the top three teams in the Atlantic 10 standings – with second-place Fordham making the trip to the Reilly Center Saturday afternoon.
And for the third time, the Bonnies enjoyed a third quarter lead, were down by single digits in the final minutes and suffered another heartbreaker, 53-44, as the Rams snuck away with a victory.
Until the final seconds, the Bonnies (7-18, 4-8) never trailed by more than eight and held Fordham (19-8, 10-3) to 33 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from beyond the arc.
"We are competing and the defense is getting where it needs to be. We are becoming the defensive team we need to be," head coach Jesse Fleming said. "Fordham is one of the grittiest teams in this league and I thought we matched their toughness. I didn't think we backed down. I'd just like to see us get more contributions from more players."
The teams were not separated by more than five points during the first half, and each time Fordham pulled ahead the Bonnies would have an answer.
Bona picked up a spark off the bench from junior Claudia Del Moral whose six second quarter points helped send the teams to intermission tied, 23-23.
Johnson started the second half with a drive to the rim for a Bonnies lead, but a 12-2 break from the Rams pushed Fordham back out ahead.
Fordham's lead grew to 35-27 late in the third, but Johnson helped the Bonnies pull closer with a pair of runs to the bucket for a six-point separation heading for the fourth.
In the final quarter, the Bonnies had chances.
With 4:40 to play, Maycock juked a defender and put her speed on display with a layup to bring the deficit to just 41-39.
Lauren Holden responded with a corner three-pointer as the shot clock ticked toward the buzzer with 3:29 remaining, and the Bonnies would never get within one possession again.
Mary Goulding led all scorers with 14 points for Fordham.
The Bonnies return to action Thursday at home, hosting Rhode Island at 7 p.m. with Senior Night festivities planned for pre-game. Thursday is also Aramark Fan Appreciation night and free popcorn will be available to all fans.
- The Bonnies held a 10-point advantage in points in the paint (20-10).
- Fordham held a narrow 36-33 edge in rebounding.
- Del Moral tied her season high with six points.
- Emily Calabrese hauled in seven rebounds.
