RICHMOND, Va. – A strong second half could not overcome an early deficit as the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team fell at Richmond Wednesday night, 57-49.

St. Bonaventure (7-17, 4-7 Atlantic 10) cut a 19-point third quarter deficit down to four with under a minute to play, but ultimately the Spiders (7-17, 4-7) held off the rally effort.

Emily Calabrese turned in her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Mckenna Maycock scored 12 points. Bree Paulson and Asianae Johnson each finished with nine apiece.

Richmond opened the game rolling, launching a 17-2 run at the outset after hitting six of its first 10 shot attempts. St. Bonaventure worked its way back in the game with a 10-4 break of its own, but the Spiders maintained a 21-12 advantage after 10 minutes.

The opening of the second quarter brought more of the same for the hosts as they scored the first eight points of the period for a 29-12 cushion.

As the third quarter dawned, the Bonnies finally found some rhythm.

St. Bonaventure embarked on a 12-2 break to cut within single digits, 41-32, with two minutes left in the third.

Richmond would extend its lead back to 13, 45-32, at the end of the third quarter, but the Bonnies were not through.

An 11-2 blitz from the Bonnies began the fourth as the visitors closed within 47-43 with under six minutes to play, forcing the Spiders to call timeout. That score held until the 4:43 mark when the Spiders quickly extended their lead back to 10, but Bona had one last gasp remaining.

Maycock and Deja Francis each put home buckets before Asianae Johnson brought the Bonnies within two possessions, 47-43, with under 50 seconds remaining after free throws. The Bonnies could not get any closer, however.

Alex Parson led all scorers with 14 points for Richmond.
